Q&A with North River Outfitter Sport
As the snow adorned the streets of Beacon Hill earlier this winter, we took some time to catch up with NRO Sport Sales Associates Danny Johnson and Megan Burns to learn about the Beacon Hill boutique’s ski gear and rentals, sporting goods, clothes, gifts, and shop. NRO is conveniently located at 39 Charles Street with a sister store on Martha’s Vineyard. Both locations live by a motto we love: “Classic is always in style.”
How would you describe NRO?
NRO is a hybrid between a preppy boutique and a sporting goods store. We have a substantial inventory of skis from renowned brands, including Blizzard, Arc’Teryx, Helly Hansen, Save the Duck, and Sail to Sable, which are suited for a range of skill levels. Our fashion selections are inspired by New England’s favorite outdoor activities – skiing, hiking, camping, and sailing. At NRO, you can find anything from a new pair of loafers, belts and ties, to colorful graduation party dresses and gifts, and functional yet fashionable attire for mountainous getaways. We also have home décor and accessories – hats, socks, novelty books, wooden signs, jewelry, candles, decorative pillows, and more.
What are your favorite mountains near Boston?
Killington and Mount Snow in Vermont, and the White Mountains. They are all close enough for a weekend trip, but far enough to feel like you’re escaping the city for a weekend retreat.
What do you consider when selecting skis?
Height and weight inform much of the decision as well as your destination. We can help select skis that are ideal for anticipated snow conditions and your ‘ski personality’. Every model of ski has a certain personality that is based on the way you maneuver the mountain. Maybe you charge fast and make sharp turns – or maybe you prefer to take a more surfy, bouncy approach to the terrain.
Understanding that some may just be trying the sport, we offer a demo program that provides customers the opportunity to test out skis for the weekend before making a purchase. We mostly demo Blizzard skis, which can vary in model type. Black Pearl, Bonafide, and Brahma models are among our customers’ most popular choices.
Ski prep recommendations?
Skiing is a great outdoor experience, and a fantastic workout. To get the best runs in, you’ll want to be nice and limber before heading down for a trial. Don’t underestimate the power of stretching, squats, and lunges. Strong muscle support will help maintain proper form and enhance endurance.
It seems like retro ski fashion is making a comeback – what do you think of the bold ski suits from the 1970s and 1980s?
Bright retro ski fashion is most definitely making a comeback. If you love to turn heads on the mountain or are looking for a great conversation starter during après ski, a neon helmet may be a good option for you. Elevenate is a classic brand that incorporates subtle color accents into their fairly traditional jackets and pants. Ski apparel is inherently simplistic and tech oriented, so a brand like Elevenate adds a fun twist to modest ski apparel.
Any fashion tips for those that favor après ski?
If you’re looking for the right apparel to maintain warmth, glamour, and style while lounging at the lodge, a pom pom hat coupled with a vest can make a nice statement. Try a neon vest if you’re looking a retro look.
